Simple Valentine’s Banner and a Party Invitation!

So you think you can craft?

Actually, I think I can’t craft.  But I’m happy to say that I’ve recently been proven wrong!

I’m excited to announce that on February 16th, I’m partnering with Hometalk and Michaels (along with 100 other hometalk bloggers in the US and Canada) for an in-store Pinterest party (woot!), and have created the easiest, cutest chalkboard bunting or banner, or whatever you wish to call it.

What’s a pinterest party? It’s an afternoon of creating your very own version of something crafty you’ve seen on pinterest.  More details about the party are at the bottom of the post. I really hope you’ll join me! RSVP to the event on facebook here.

I must admit, when I was contacted about this event I was a little hesitant about doing it.

You want ME to make a craft?  Seriously?  Have you seen my last one?

But I accepted the challenge, and have set out to show you that anyone can be crafty with the right supplies and a little bit of inspiration.

And you know what? My mind has been changed about my crafting skills during the whole process. And that’s a pretty big deal.

A few days ago, I headed out to my local Michaels to check out the inspiration projects and supplies, still skeptical about whether or not I could do this. And I was a little nervous, truth be told. But, I was up for the challenge. So I started walking around the store and seeing what they had.

Then I found this.  Chalk board everything. My heart started to beat a little faster.

And these cute chalkboard jars. Heart beating a little faster still.

Monogrammed burlap canvas boards?  Wow. That’s seriously awesome.

Oooh!  Pretty little colored glass bottles…with chalkboard labels! Did they set this up just for me?

And just in time for spring, a pretty bird cage with an inspiration photo for your own project.

Then there were these two little green, crackled birds.  I got a little distracted with all of the Spring decor they had recently added.  They are much more than just craft items!

And then something happened!

My heart grew 3 sizes that day.  (No, wait, that was the Grinch.)

No really, I actually got quite excited about this event and felt like I could create something with my own two hands that I would be proud to have in my own home!

You see, I found these awesome precut, pre-hole-punched, twine-included chalkboard pages. Easy as pie. And I’ve always loved chalkboard banners. This had my name written all over it (pun intended).

The Michaels store event coordinator helped me find the chalk markers to write on the pages for my banner.  Have you ever used these things? I’m in love with them now.

I practiced my lettering before writing on the chalkboard pages. A damp cloth will erase the marker from the pages, so you really don’t have to practice first. I wanted to get a feel for the pens and how the chalk flowed from them before diving into the chalkboard pages.

I did an internet search for chalkboard fonts and tried to recreate the simplest one I could find, and this is what I ended up with.  Not bad for an amateur like me!

All that was left to do was string the twine through the pages and hang it up!  Simple as that!

I hung the banner over our family room mantel as part of our simple Valentine’s decor. If I had known how easy this was going to be, I would have done it a long time ago!  And now I’m wondering what other easy crafts I’m going to do next!

Here’s what you need for this simple project, all from Michaels:

  • Chalkboard pages
  • Chalk markers
  • Twine (the package came with black and white, but I wanted red and white so I bought that)
  • Scissors
  • Something to attach it with.  I used scotch tape.  Fancy stuff 🙂

How about you?  Are you ready to create something simple and fun?
