An amazing pecan pie with Jack Daniels as the secret ingredient

Traditions. It’s what the holidays are all about. Regardless of exactly how you celebrate, chances are pretty good that you enjoy your own holiday traditions each and every year.

Seeing family, exchanging gifts, decorating the home, holiday music…they’re all great traditions. But one of my favorite traditions is the fabulous food!

I won’t lie, I like to eat good food. Who doesn’t? And since I live in the South, the food is usually the star attraction of any get together. At Thanksgiving we always have the traditional turkey and dressing with all the fixins. And we ALWAYS have way too much food. Desserts are no exception.

But nobody around here is complaining! Our traditional Thanksgiving desserts include pumpkin and pecan pies and usually a couple of other goodies to fatten us up for the winter months.

Each year I make at least 2 pecan pies for Thanksgiving and have been doing so for 20 years or more. Somehow I got started with it and now it’s expected. I use fresh Georgia pecans and a secret ingredient…Tennessee whiskey. Jack Daniels to be exact. The pride of Tennessee.

Very appropriate since I’ve lived in Tennessee for my entire life. I’ve used rum before and it’s also a great addition. And no, you don’t taste the alcohol.

Confession: I don’t actually drink Jack Daniels, but I love to cook with it. I’ve made whiskey cakes before and they’re wonderful. If you don’t want a bottle this size, you can probably find the mini bottles at your local liquor store.

Below is how the pie(s) should look before going into the oven. I suggest placing them on a baking sheet to catch anything that bubbles over the edge. It will keep your oven clean. Just be sure to leave a little space between the pies for better air circulation.

And here’s how the yummy inside looks. Yes, of course I ate the piece that used to be in this spot and it was like a little slice of heaven.

*Note – Since this recipe takes a couple of hours and also because it’s so popular with my family, I ALWAYS make 2 pies. I simply double the recipe.

  1. This looks delicious. There are a lot of pecan pie recipes out there but this looks like a keeper. It has been pinned!

  2. I'm pinning your recipe, too! We are surrounded by pecan trees and there's plenty of Jack Daniels in the house! In years past, I have been known to soak the pecans in bourbon before making the pies! HeHe!

    1. Being surrounded by pecan trees sounds wonderful. But I sure wouldn't want to have to crack them! Soaking them before putting in the pie is a great idea! I'll have to try that next time. Thanks for dropping by! ~ Angie

    1. Thanks, Vanessa! They are yummy with or without the whiskey. Thanks for dropping by! ~ Angie

  3. Oh, Angie! I'm making this pie this year! We all love pecan pie. I make "Whiskey Nuts" for Christmas using Jack Daniels. I know this pie will be a hit!! Thanks for joining the tour. ~Jeanette

  5. I'm reading Thanksgiving posts this morning with my mom and asked her to guess your secret ingredient and she got it right. It is also our Thanksgiving tradition to have pecan pie. Your recipe looks delicious. I'll definitely print it out for my files.

    1. I like the way your mom thinks. 🙂 Thanksgiving without pie just wouldn't be the same at our house! Have a great weekend.

  6. This looks incredible! Rum is plenty down here in Barbados, so I think I would try that version. Thanks for sharing and this recipe is definitely betting pinned! Visiting from #SITSBlogging ~Ree

    1. Thanks Ree! I've made a rum version before and it's yummy too. How nice it must be to live in a place like Barbados! Thanks for dropping by!

  7. Oh my goodness! Your pecan pie looks incredible. I have never made a pecan pie, BUT I am going to need to make this soon.
    Thanks for sharing, Angie 🙂

  8. Love this recipe… but I'm a Texas girl and I'm sticking to Texas Pecans! Following from SITS Sharefest!

    1. I'm sure the Texas pecans are great too. Anything locally grown is always so much better! Thanks for dropping by!

  9. Could hug your neck for printing this Pecan Pie recipe!!! Seriously! My husband used to make Pecan Pies. They were THE BEST! He always started out cooking the sugar, etc. on the stove first, like this one. (Unlike most recipes where you just mix everything in the mixer.) There was something about cooking the sugars, etc. that made the custard creamy and PERFECT every time! Anyway, one day I cleaned out our pantry one day and threw my husband’s Pecan Pie recipe away. He never did forgive me! I really believe it’s his recipe, minus the recipe, minus the bourbon! I’ve search for years to find a pecan recipe that starts out on the stovetop! Thanks for sharing!
