Best of 2013: The most viewed posts

Hello, friends!  Can you believe another year is almost in the history books?  It's scary how fast time flies!

It's been a busy year here in the ridge with lots of projects completed and even more that have been added to my to-do list.

Today I'm doing a recap of the 10 most popular posts of 2013, based on visits and comments by my savvy readers.  Without further ado, here we go!

Painted and stencilled rock maple 5-drawer dresser

Hello, friends!  I've got a furniture reveal for you today.  I finished this piece last week and put it out for sale and it sold in a week!  I was kinda hoping it wouldn't sell so I would have to bring it home, but one of my customers was looking for something exactly this size and she snatched it up as soon as she saw it.  But that's a good thing, I guess!

Painted and stencilled 5-drawer dresser

For the makeover, first I cleaned it with Gloss Off, then I painted it with Benjamin Moore Rocky Beach.  This piece didn't have any detailing or carving, so I added some interest to it with a stencil. I used Benjamin Moore French Canvas on the stencilled areas.

Hello, friends!  I hope everyone is enjoying the Christmas season and is way ahead of me on your shopping and decorating.  I've been busy with work and projects and haven't finished mine yet but hope to have it all done very soon.

I've took a short break from blogging last month to try to get caught up with things around here and now I want to show you what's been going on.

First of all, and BEST of all, we have a new bathroom!!!!

Christmas Postcards ~ Our Holiday Home Tour

Hello, friends!  I hope you're enjoying the holiday season this year.  I'm looking forward to doing some baking with my girls this weekend and attending a couple of fun parties over the next couple of weeks.  This time of year is always so much fun to get together and see everyone and get the house all decked out.

The simplest Christmas decorations ever in the history of the world

Hello, friends! Our house has been getting decked out for Christmas and I still have a mess here with boxes and such, but I've gotten a few pictures that I wanted to share.  These are some of my favorite decorations because they're the easiest things you'll ever see.  In my mind, I like to keep it simple.  Because, as you know, what goes up must come down.  Or be put away a few days after Christmas, anyway.

It doesn't get much simpler than this.  Shiny ornaments in a pretty bowl.  You've probably got these already. If not, stop by Walgreens on your next trip out and you've got this one covered.

7 days to a new bathroom

Hello friends!  We've had some exciting things happening around here over the last few weeks and I wanted to show you how it's all been progressing.

Here's a peek at the finished room, to be revealed more fully in the next few days.

$500!!! I know!  Amazing.  I wish I could win, but I can't.

How to get your fireplace ready for fires

Hello, friends!  Now that October is in full swing I can't help but look forward to the first fire of the season in our fireplace.  I absolutely love a wood-burning fireplace and don't think I could live without ours.  Well, I could go on living, but it wouldn't be near as cozy during the colder months.

5 Essentials for your fireplace

Favorite Paint Color ~ Fall Edition

Hello, friends!  And happy hues-day! It's been a few weeks since we had hues-day Tuesday on the blog, and I thought October would be a great time to showcase some fall benjamin moore paint colors.

Bella Blue Painted and Crackled Hutch

Hello, friends.  I've got a furniture reveal for you today.

Last week I finally finished another piece of furniture.  This one was fun, as I experimented with some crackle medium and other "resist" techniques.

Hello, friends.  I hope you're enjoying the fall weather in your neck of the woods as much as we're enjoying it here on the ridge.  It's been so fabulous lately, and the forecast is amazing. I've been decorating for fall and made our first batch of chili for dinner last night.

I've also been sprucing up some of the rooms in our house lately (go here or here to see some), and one of them is our guest bath.

Update: Go here to see the completely remodeled guest/hall bath.

It's slated for a complete remodel in the next couple of months, but we went ahead and changed out the old toilet a couple of weeks ago.  Why not just wait?  Well, here's why:

First Day of Fall Giveaway

Hello, friends.  HAPPY FALL!  I'm so glad it's officially fall now.  The temps here are a little cool this morning and some of the leaves have started to fall.  It's such a glorious time of the year.

Sneak peek

Hello, friends.  I've been busy working on projects and planning for some upcoming projects and don't have a full post,  but am going to give a little sneak peek of something that I just finished yesterday.

It's a small China hutch that got a facelift with some interesting paint techniques and waxes.  I'll have a full reveal post coming up soon, as well as some other fun stuff.

I just wanted to keep in touch with everyone and let you know that good things are coming!

I hope everyone is having a great week!

Thanks for dropping by.

Angie

How to clean your microwave

Hello, friends! Today I'm sharing a very simple tip for cleaning your microwave.  I learned this method over 10 years ago and have been doing it this way ever since.  It involves no chemicals, no scrubbing, and is so simple you won't believe it.

Postcards from the Ridge: How to steam-clean the microwave. Works like a dream. All natural and no scrubbing involved.

Hello, friends!  Are you in the mood for Fall as much as I am?  I know it's early September and the calendar and weather say it's still summer, but I'm already craving fall colors and clothing!

One of the things that's making me itch for Fall is all the beautiful magazines and catalogs that arrive almost daily.  And one of the most inspiring ones is "Celebrating everyday life with Jennifer Carroll".

Bella Rustica Road Trip

Hello, friends! Two weekends ago I headed a couple of hours west and attended Bella Rustica, a pop-up event where all kinds of cool vintage items were for sale.  I bought a few things for myself, but saw so many great creations.  I thought it would be fun to share some of what I saw.

This greeted us as we entered the outside booths.  They won 1st place for best booth, and it was well deserved honor.

Orange and Turquoise: A match made in color heaven

Happy Hues-day, friends!  My schedule is a bit off this week, so our regularly scheduled Tuesday-huesday is late.  And although I usually feature one specific paint color, today I'm featuring two shades, orange and aqua. I'm such a rebel this week!

What's the first color that comes to mind when you think of Fall?  For me, it's definitely orange. And when you pair it with the right hue, it's a fabulous color to decorate with.  Are you not a fan of orange?  Scroll down to see what I'm talking about.

How to Refinish Wood Furniture

Hello, friends!  Since everyone loved the top of the antique desk that got refinished and painted, I thought it would be helpful to do a tutorial on how to refinish furniture.  It's definitely not one of the most fun DIY projects, but it's good to know how to do this for any piece of wood furniture that has a beat up finish over a nice wood grain. The first piece of furniture I refinished was more than 20 years ago and I've done quite a few pieces since then.

Favorite Paint Color ~ Benjamin Moore Edgecomb Gray

Hello, friends! Happy Hues-day!  Each week (on Tuesday) a favorite paint color is featured here.  This week the color is Benjamin Moore Edgecomb Gray.

A Painted Antique Desk Makes the Grade

Hello, friends!  Today I'm revealing a project that I'm really excited about.  It's a painted antique desk with some gorgeous details.  It took lots of products to bring it to its full potential, and several days to complete, but here it is in all its glory.

For a full tutorial on how to refinish furniture, go here.

Favorite Paint Color ~ Benjamin Moore Stratton Blue

Happy Hues-day, friends!  And welcome to "favorite paint color" day on the blog.  Each week a different paint color is featured.  Today's color is Benjamin Moore Stratton Blue, a beautiful turquoise that looks great on walls, cabinets, and furniture!

Stratton Blue is a color that would go great with cream, orange, cranberry, or yellow-greens.  It has some gray undertones, so strong, clear, bright colors wouldn't look as good with it as somewhat muted colors would.

Favorite Paint Color ~ Benjamin Moore Calypso Blue

Happy Hues-day friends!  Welcome to "Favorite Paint Color" day.  Every Tuesday a favorite paint color is featured.  Today's color is Benjamin Moore Calypso Blue, and I'm seriously crushing on this one.

Haven Bound!

Hello, friends!  Today is the day I've been looking forward to since way back in January when I signed up to attend the Haven Conference in Atlanta.  I've got my bags packed and my car loaded and now I'm heading down the Atlanta highway....

oh vintage suitcases.

Now that you've got the "Love Shack" song stuck in your head, you can thank me.  :)

Favorite Paint Color ~ Marblehead Gold

Happy Hues-day, friends! Welcome to Favorite Color Day on the blog!  Each Tuesday (aka Hues-day) a different color is featured here.  Today's color is Benjamin Moore Marblehead Gold, HC-11.

Marblehead Gold is a rich gold with a mustard hue.  It makes a bold statement and is a great complement to many other colors.

Way out West ~ Our summer vacation

Hello friends!  As I write this post and realize that summer is almost over, I'm blown away at how fast it has gone by.  I can't believe that our kids start back to school in just over 2 weeks!

We were lucky enough to get to take a family trip out west earlier this month and today I'm sharing some pictures of the highlights of our trip.  Be warned, there are quite a few photos in this post, but the scenery was amazing and I hope you enjoy the photos half as much as I enjoyed taking them.

Scroll down to get a sneak peek of what we saw as we drove through Arizona, Nevada, and California...canyons, valleys, forests, mountains, lakes, and oceans.  And a few beautiful sunsets along the way.

Sunrise at the Grand Canyon.  This was the first morning of our trip and was a wonderful way to start it.

Favorite Paint Color ~ Benjamin Moore Quiet Moments

Happy hues-day, friends!  It's Tuesday, so that means today is Favorite Color Day here on the blog!  A different color is featured each week.

Today's color is Benjamin Moore Quiet Moments, #1563.  It's one of my very favorites.

Gallery Buff and Wythe Blue Painted Vintage Secretary Hutch

Hello friends!  I thought it was time to reveal a finished project that's been several months in the making.  Not because it was a really big project, but because I've got the speed of a turtle sometimes.

I FINALLY finished giving a makeover to the secretary desk that I bought from a local customer waaaay back in February.  And I kinda like the way it turned out.

Favorite Paint Color ~ Benjamin Moore Chelsea Gray

Hello friends, and Happy Hues-day!  Tuesday is officially favorite color day here on the blog so it's been renamed "Hues-day".  Each week a different color is featured.  This week's favorite color is Benjamin Moore Chelsea Gray, HC-168.

Chelsea Gray is a deep, warmer gray, as opposed to being a cool, blue-gray.  It leans a little towards taupe, but is still a true gray.  Warm colors would be good accents for Chelsea Gray.

Favorite Target home items and a $120 gift card giveaway!

Hello friends! It's giveaway time, and this is a great one.  Could you use $120 to spend at Target?  Who couldn't??

What summertime looks like to me

Hello, friends! I hope everyone is having a great day.

We're traveling today, but I thought I'd share some images of summertime with you.  I snapped these a couple of weeks ago at my parents' lake house.  We usually spend the 4th down there, but our travel plans didn't allow us to this year.

I posted this pic of the neighbors chairs on facebook a couple of weeks ago.  The lake waters were way up due to some recent heavy rains.  I took the picture early in the morning and there was a light fog the made it appear like it was blurry.  Notice the lone fisherman in the top right.

Favorite Paint Color ~ Benjamin Moore Manchester Tan

Happy Hues-day, friends!  Welcome to the 5th week in my new blog series featuring some of my favorite paint colors.  In the spotlight this week is Benjamin Moore Manchester Tan, one of our most popular shades at the paint shop.

Happy 4th of July!

Happy Independence Day!

I hope everyone has a safe and fun holiday!

XOXOX,

Angie

Favorite Paint Color ~ All American Edition

Happy Hues-day, friends!  Welcome to week 4 of my blog series about favorite paint colors.

In honor of Independence Day, the colors of the day are red, white, and blue.  Specifically, Benjamin Moore Caliente, White Dove, and Hudson Bay, (and also Gray Mist).

I hope everyone is getting prepared for a fabulous 4th of July.  I know we are!

Red, white, and blue will always be a classic in this country.  Although it's usually seen more in farmhouse or rustic decor, it can be used anywhere.

Bathroom Inspiration ~ Open Shelf Vanity

Postcards from the Ridge: Unique vanity ideas

Apparently we have another bathroom remodel in our future.  Such is the risk when you try to make an update in a 50-year-old house.  Last year we had to remodel our master bath, and now it's the guest bath that needs our attention.  Here's a peek at how our master bath turned out:

Favorite Paint Color ~ Benjamin Moore Revere Pewter

Happy hues-day, friends!  Welcome to week 3 of my new series about my favorite paint colors.  In case you missed the first two, week one featured Benjamin Moore Wythe Blue and can be found here.  Week two featured the new Williamsburg Colors from Benjamin Moore and is right here.

The featured color this week is Benjamin Moore Revere Pewter, HC-172.  It's the most searched color on the Benjamin Moore website, and for good reason.

It's a giveaway! $150 to Target, HomeGoods or World Market!!!

Hello friends!  How about another give away since y'all are so awesome!   This time you get to decide where to spend it!

Favorite Paint Colors ~ The New Williamsburg Collection from Benjamin Moore

Happy Huesday, friends!  And welcome to the 2nd installment of my new blog series about favorite paint colors.  In case you missed last week's feature on Wythe Blue, you can see it right here.

Today I'll be previewing a portion of a palette of historical hues from the 18th and early 19th centuries instead of just one single color.  Just launched this month is the Williamsburg Collection from Benjamin Moore.

Kitchen Cleaning Tips

Hello friends!  I know it's summer, but today I've got some incredible cleaning tips for you.  If only cleaning was limited to "Spring Cleaning", the world would be a much happier place.  I know, right?  But the reality is that cleaning is a year-round chore whether we like it or not.

Favorite Paint Color ~ Benjamin Moore Wythe Blue

Hello friends!  Happy Huesday to you!

Some of you may know that part of my job involves working with paint colors and finishes every day, and it's something I really enjoy.  Well...it's enjoyable as long as I'm not trying to choose a color for my house.  That's something I always agonize over, but we won't go there.
