2014 Top Ten Posts

Yep, it's that time again. The end of the year when everywhere you look there's a recap of something. I guess it's a good thing to look back and see what we've accomplished or learned. And since I'm nowhere near as funny as David Letterman, I'll keep this short and sweet. But really, can you believe another year has come and gone?

Curious facts about my top 10:

  • 2 of these are "round up" posts.
  • 4 of these posts are paint related.
  • 9 of them involve a tutorial, tip, or ideas for redoing something.

Merry Christmas 2014

The Birth of Jesus

Luke 2 In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. (This was the first census that took place while[a] Quirinius was governor of Syria.) And everyone went to their own town to register.
So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them.
And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. 10 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. 11 Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. 12 This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”
13 Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying,
14 “Glory to God in the highest heaven,
and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.”
15 When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.”

Merry Christmas, friends. May you have a joyous day surrounded by those you love.

Home for the Holidays ~ 2014 Christmas Home Tour

Happy holidays, merry Christmas, happy Hanukkah, or whatever you celebrate! It's full blown Christmas at our house right now, and today's the day we're kicking off our Home for the Holidays tour!  I'll be joined by 24 other bloggers who are sharing their homes this week.

I can't wait to see all the beautiful spaces and get some great ideas for next year! Check back each day to visit everyone on the list. The lineup is at the bottom of the post and I highly recommend you drop by each home for a visit. You'll be glad you did!

For my tour, I'm starting with my favorite photos and then sharing more from each space. I took several hundred photos and narrowed it down to my favorites. I hope you like what you see! If you're new here, ours is a 1964 ranch style house that we've updated with paint and a couple of bathroom remodels. It's definitely nothing fancy, but neither are we.

Welcome to our home for the holidays!

Welcome to our Christmas Home!

Ho ho ho! And welcome to our home! Today I'm joining a group of my blogging friends for our Welcome Home tour where we're sharing front porches, entries, or any old way to make guests  feel welcome. Since I'm sharing the inside of the house on Monday, today you get to see what our guests are greeted with as they walk up to our door.

Here on our front porch you'll find several vintage items since I'm a vintage junkie. I clipped the branches from various trees and bushes from the yard and added some clippings I got for free at the Christmas tree lot when we bought our tree. Holly, nandina, and magnolia make up the bulk of the branches. There's nothing like fresh greenery.

12 Days of Christmas...with a fun twist

Welcome, friends! 'Tis the season to be......overcommited! Can I get an amen?

With stars in my eyes and twinkles on my toes (or something like that) I decided it would be so much fun to sign up for several wonderful blogger holiday tours. And while they are definitely fun, they're lots of work too.

Today's post is part of a blogger tour with the 12 days of Christmas as the theme. Some of my best blogging buddies are on this tour with me. And as fun as it sounds, six geese a laying is a tough one to blog about. I signed up a little late and the dancing ladies and milking maids were already spoken for. As well as the lords and the drummers. When life gives you geese....well, think Goslings. Keep reading to learn the story behind what we made. You're gonna love it and you're gonna laugh.

Cookie recipe swap 2014

It's that time of the year....cookie baking time! We love to bake cookies at our house and I'll bet you do to. Even more than baking, we love EATING cookies.

And it's time for cookie swaps! A few of my blogging buddies and I are doing things a little different and having an online cookie swap. How does it work? Simply share a photo and link to your favorite cookie recipe and you're in! Click on the "Add your link" button at the bottom of the post to add yours.

I can't wait to try out some new cookie recipes!

OMG Butterscotch and Chocolate Chip Blondies - Virtual Cookie Swap

It's Cookie Swap time!! Except this time you don't have to make 20 dozen and carry them to someone else's house. This time you can make them for yourself and eat them all at home!!

Today I'm sharing a recipe that has been one of my favorites for years. We usually make it with chocolate chips, but added butterscotch the last 2 times we (my daughters and I) made it. My 15-year-old asked me if the recipe was from God when she tasted the butterscotch version. I'll take that as a giant thumbs up because she's the pickiest one in the family. Hence the name "OMG Blondies". You're gonna say that when you take a bite of these. Really, you are.

Red Hot Cocoa Cart ~ Themed Furniture Makeover

It's here again! Themed furniture makeover day! I love this challenge because it always pushes me to think outside the box somewhat. And this month's theme was no exception. Our theme this month is RED. And although I love red and used to have lots of it in my house previously, I don't have as much these days. But that might change because now I'm starting to fall in love with it again.

I love all things Pottery Barn and have bought several things from them. But my budget doesn't always allow me to get everything that's on my wish list. Traditions. It's what the holidays are all about. Regardless of exactly how you celebrate, chances are pretty good that you enjoy your own holiday traditions each and every year. Centuries-old scenery from Prague, Czech Republic

Prague, Czech Republic was not at the top of my bucket list, but my husband had a business related trip there recently and I was fortunate enough to get to go with him. Who wouldn't want to travel? The architecture there was simply beautiful and I thought I'd share some highlights of our trip.

How to make a pillow with trim

Let's have a pillow party! Or maybe a pillow fight? Naah, a party is always better than a fight.

Can you ever have too many pillows? My husband would probably disagree, but I say you can't. Making your own pillows is an inexpensive way to add some color, texture, and style to a space.

Make a floor fashion statement with a stencilled faux rug

Are you bored with your floors? I've got a solution for you! If you've been following me on Instagram, you've seen updates on the progress of our craft room. I've done LOTS of painting and purging in the room and am almost finished with the complete overhaul of the space. I can't wait to be done and have a quiet, dedicated space to create in.

The most recent phase of this project that I completed was the floor. I'm so happy with the way it turned out.

Two-toned dresser ~ Furniture Makeover Day

It's furniture makeover day! Once a month my furniture painting gal pals and I get together and share painted furniture makeovers with a fun theme. This month's theme is two-toned pieces.

For this piece, I painted all of it except the top in a taupe color. I used Benjamin Moore Eagle Rock #1469 in eggshell finish.

Vintage themed fall decor and Fall home tour

When it says September on the calendar I immediately start thinking about cooler temps and cozy sweaters. It's still fairly hot here so the sweaters will have to wait, but the fall decorations have already begun creeping their way out of storage and are gracing the mantels and breakfast room hutch. If you follow me on Instgram or Facebook you've been getting sneak peeks for the past couple of days.

A few ideas for fall decorating

I know, I know. It's only the first week of September but I'm ready to add some fall decor to the house and definitely ready for this heat to be gone. I haven't gotten too much of our fall decor out yet but here are some of my favorites from the past couple of years. I'll share this year's version next week so stay tuned for that!

Blogland Tour

I've met some of the nicest, most talented people since I started blogging a few years ago. I'm truly amazed at the amount of creativity and talent out there. And how great is it that people want to share their knowledge with others? I, for one, and very grateful and have been inspired to take on many projects because of what I've seen in the blogosphere.

One of the nicest people I've met recently is Christy at Our Southern Home. She's a sweet Southern gal who has a gorgeous Country French home and she's always doing some type of amazing project. Today I'm sharing some of my favorites, as well as photos of her home. You'll definitely want to drop by and see her blog for yourself, and be sure to tell her I sent you!

College dorm room organizing and decorating ideas

Last week we moved our oldest daughter into her dorm room. It was an exciting day for her moving into her first place away from home. And a little sad for mom and dad knowing that baby bird #1 is flying away. Don't get me started again.

Really though, it was fun helping her set up her new things in this brand new dorm that she's now living in. Here's how it looked when her dad and I left on move-in day.

Moen Motionsense Faucet Giveaway!

Guys, I'm truly excited about this giveaway. Not that I don't get excited about giving things away, but this is a great product and I really want others to be able to enjoy it as much as I do!

Do you remember earlier this year when I replaced our kitchen faucet mostly by myself? I had never done any plumbing before then and it gave me such a sense of accomplishment. Not to mention that it saved me money that I would have had to pay a plumber. It's been several months since that project and I absolutely love my faucet and am so glad I did it myself. (Read all about the project and see all of the before, during, and after photos here.)

CANdy gram teacher gift

This shop is part of a social shopper marketing insight campaign with Pollinate Media Group and Sharpie, but all my opinions are my own. #pmedia #StaplesBTS #SharpieBTS

School started here yesterday. My youngest began her high school career and my oldest will be starting her freshman year in college in a few days. It sounds so strange to be saying that!

I have several friends who are teachers and they truly love what they do, but let's face it...working with our kids 7 or 8 hours of every day is no cake walk. So why not treat these hardworking, special people to something fun and frivolous? I've got a simple idea for that.

I made a CANdy gram teacher gift. (Let me know if you, too, are envisioning a LAND SHARK now! From very old SNL skits if you are very young and have no idea what I'm talking about.)

This project is so simple and fun. And it can be done in 30 minutes or less! You can spend as little or as much as you like. And you can easily pick up supplies for this project while you're doing your back-to-school shopping at Staples. Read on for the how-to!

Simple Photography Tips: How to capture a great shot

Hello, friends! Today I'm sharing a few simple tips for capturing great shots. In upcoming posts I'll also be sharing tips on black and white photography, editing in lightroom, and I'll share my favorite equipment soon so stay tuned for that.

How to crackle paint like a pro

As you know, I like to paint furniture. And I like to let the piece's personality come out in the process. Sometimes I want to make a piece look more aged and will do some distressing and waxing and glazing, etc.

One of the pieces I painted recently needed to look more aged in my opinion, so I decided to do some crackle finish in specific areas. I wanted it to appear as if it had aged over time, so I chose areas that might show the most wear and age to do the crackle technique. Kinda like the aging process that we humans go through and we have more wrinkles in specific places. You get the idea.

Adventures and Scenes from Italy

Hello, friends! Or maybe I should say bonjourno!

Today I'm sharing some of my favorite photos I shot on our recent bucket list trip to Italy. With an endless supply of amazing ancient architecture, beautiful hilltowns, beaches, and more, it's a truly photographer's dream. Not to mention the great food, abundant wine, and iconic museums. It's definitely a place that everyone should visit at least once in their life!

How to easily paint numbers or letters on furniture

Today I'm joining forces with a few of my friends and revealing furniture makeovers that involve numbers. You'll definitely want to drop by and see all of the awesome projects we've completed.

I've got a really fun, extremely easy project to share with you. I've had these wooden stools for a while now and had painted them in these vibrant colors. They were cute, but needed a little something more. I added simple numbers to the seats and now they're super fun. And the process was much easier than you might think. Read on for the details.

Haven 2014 Recap and Review

Hey y'all! I spent last weekend at the  Haven Conference and couldn't be more excited about everything that I saw and learned. And, of course, I had a great time catching up with some of my blog friends.

This was the last night of the conference with a few of my blog friends. Ryobi sponsored the event. We had a blast.

20 amazing ways to update furniture with paint

(See my projects here). Painted furniture is hugely popular these days and is something most people can do or can learn to do with a little bit of effort.

Revere Pewter ~ Favorite Color Palette

We regularly make recommendations for colors to pair with Revere Pewter, and those are the colors featured here today. For an entire post on Revere Pewter, go here.

How to make a map bunting

Hello, friends! Happy June!

I've been on a brief hiatus from blogging so I could enjoy and celebrate my oldest daughter's graduation from high school and all the events that go along with it, as well as my younger daughter's completion of middle school. Our end-of-the-school-year activities were crazy busy this year.

I don't know about you, but after all of our activities I'm definitely ready for a vacation. And today I'm sharing a fun way to document your vacation travels by making a personalized map bunting.

How to make a map bunting. She used maps of places they've traveled to. This one can be easily added to.

Take a walk on the wild side

Hello, friends! I'm switching gears a little bit today. I hope you don't mind too much. Although I usually show inspiring interiors and decorating projects, today I want to share some beauty from nature with you. In case you missed it earlier this week, I shared a few ways to use items from nature in your decor here.

We live in a very lush area of the country and like to get out and hike and go exploring in the spring and fall. Last weekend we went on a wildflower hike at nearby Norris Dam and there were lots of wildflowers in bloom. Today, for something a little different, I'm sharing the photos with you in the hopes that you'll get out and go exploring in nature for yourself! No matter where you live, there's something beautiful to see.

Are you planning to paint your front door and have no idea what color to choose?

I know how you feel. Our front door could use a makeover and I'm not sure which direction to go. I've scoured the internet for inspiration and am sharing some of the prettiest doors on the web, along with the colors used.

Ideas for using turquoise as an accent color

Hello, friends! Thank goodness spring has finally arrived here! I've been refreshing our decor and adding a few spring touches lately. I took these photos on a recent sunny day and after looking at them I noticed a definite theme....TURQUOISE. I hadn't realized that I have touches of turquoise in almost every room of our house.

In the family room, the candles and letter "K" add touches of turqouise. There are also some squares in the granny square throw that have some turquoise.

My favorite place to unplug and unwind

Hello, friends! Today I'm sharing a few pics from our visit to my folks' lake house over spring break. It's truly a mix of styles, but it's very comfortable and relaxed.

Welcome to the lake. It's the favorite warm weather hangout for my family.

Stencilled Old World Chest of Drawers

*This is a sponsored post. I was provided with product and/or other compensation for this project by Royal Design Studio. However, the opinions are mine and I'm sharing my real life experience using the product.*

Hello, friends! How are ya? I've been busy with lots of projects lately, including giving a makeover to a chest of drawers we've had for a few years. This piece was previously painted white and needed some refreshing after being used in my daughter's room for several years. Things didn't go exactly as I had planned for this project, but after a bit of frustration and then some creative thinking, it turned out pretty much how I had envisioned it.

I was going for an old world look...something that looked like it had been painted by an artisan years ago.

Benjamin Moore Gray Wisp ~ Favorite Paint Color

Hello, friends! I've got another favorite color to share with you. Today's favorite is Benjamin Moore Gray Wisp. It's one of those colors that looks gray sometimes, blue sometimes, and green sometimes. The lighting and items against it really make a difference in how it appears.

Moen Brantford Kitchen Faucet Installation and Review

*This is a sponsored post. I was provided with product and/or other compensation for the faucet written about in this post by Moen and National Builder Supply. However, the opinions stated are completely my own and I am sharing my real life experience with installing the faucet myself.*

Hello, friends! Can you believe it's already March? I'm so glad spring is almost here for good.

I've been busy with several small projects lately and wanted to reveal one of my favorite ones today. And I have to say that I feel like a kid with a new toy after finishing this project.

Our old kitchen faucet had been leaky for a while, and it also had a lower profile than we liked. It was difficult to get large pots or pitchers underneath. We wanted and needed to change out the old one and had been looking at the gooseneck or high arc type with the pull down sprayer. Thanks to National Builder Supply and Moen, we were able to upgrade to a gorgeous new faucet that was exactly what we had been wanting.

Union Jack Dresser with Handmade Rope Drawer Pulls

Hello, friends! I hope you're getting a taste of Spring-like weather in your neck of the woods. It's been a little warmer here and we're so glad.

I've been finishing some projects and today I'm revealing what might be my favorite painted piece of furniture to date. Although I nearly sent it to the burn pile before I finished it.

Meet Queen "B", named such because of her English style and her uncooperative attitude. If you've ever painted a Union Jack flag on a piece of furniture that wasn't flat, you know exactly what I'm talking about.

Benjamin Moore Shaker Beige ~ Favorite Paint Color

Hello, friends! It's been a few weeks since I posted a favorite color, but today I'm sharing our all-time most popular neutral at the paint shop, Benjamin Moore Shaker Beige HC-45.

It's a mid-tone neutral that goes with just about any color. It's not too gray, not too yellow, not too pink, but more like coffee with cream. At least that's what my coffee looks like each morning, but I probably have as much cream as coffee in my cup!
