Vintage Christmas Decorating Ideas

If you’ve ever visited here before, then you probably know that I’m a big fan of decorating with vintage items, especially at Christmas. There’s just something about using an item that’s been around a long time that makes a home feel cozy and interesting. Those old pieces usually have character and, if your lucky, you know the stories behind them.

Today I’m teaming up with a few of my home decor friends and we’re sharing some home tours and ideas for making your home festive and cozy for the Christmas season. The tour is hosted by Leigh at The Little by Little Home and you’re sure to find ideas that you can use.

I’m sharing a few areas I’ve decorated for Christmas along with some easy ways you can incorporate vintage items in your Christmas decor. Many of these items can be found at thrift stores or yard sales so they’re budget friendly too! Here are my favorite ways to have a vintage Christmas.

1. Vintage dishes

I love using vintage dishes on our table any time of the year, but especially during the holidays. Although I have some red transferware dishes and some with a winter scene, I always seem to end up with white dishes. They’re easy to find and they go with everything!

This year I used some fun red and white striped napkins, little preserved boxwood wreaths, and my carved white wooden chargers. It’s a fresh and festive way to decorate the table, and I already had everything on hand. (I’ve been collecting/hoarding for years, lol)

2. Vintage ornaments

Vintage Christmas ornaments aren’t just for the tree. I like to use them in bowls, on trays, in jars, or
scattered on our table. There’s no limit to where you can use them and they’re so fun and colorful.

3. Vintage milk glass

Milk glass is so affordable, easy to find, and fun to decorate with. This milk glass cake pedestal (see similar one here → milk glass cake stand) is the perfect place to set some plates and add a little Christmas decor with the boxwood wreath and vintage ornaments. Milk glass vases are
pretty with holly and pine sprigs tucked into them too.

4. Vintage ironstone

Vintage ironstone looks so pretty with red and green accents at Christmas. I’ve been collecting
ironstone platters, plates and pitchers for years and love how versatile they are. I have mine
in our old hutch all year and added some festive accents for the holidays. A few holly sprigs, colorful vintage ornaments, and boxwood accents are all it took to make it Christmas-y.

And in our family room, I borrowed my ironstone pitchers from the hutch and decorated our mantel with them. It was something I did on a whim, but really like the way they look here. They might just stay here for a while.

5. Vintage silverware

For a little sparkle, I like to add old silverware pieces to little ironstone creamers and bowls. A little holly was added to make it ideal for the holidays.

6. Vintage transferware

On my coffee and cocoa tiered tray, I’m using my vintage red transferware sugar bowl. The red is perfect with my reproduction Santa mugs. A few preserved boxwood and faux eucalyptus accents add some texture and contrasting color. And I picked up some pomegranates at the grocery store for a natural element.

7. Vintage metal cabinet

Admittedly, this vintage piece by our basement entry isn’t your typical Christmas item. But it’s one of my favorite recent finds and it has a greenish hue so I couldn’t resist adding some Christmas decor. Most of the items here are from my little shop, but the plaid throw blanket and wooden crate are vintage. I can’t wait to decorate it for different seasons throughout the year.

8. Vintage Jadeite

Vintage jadeite looks good with red, or you can go a different direction and use it with blue and white for Christmas. See more of our vintage jadeite with blue and white here: Cozy Christmas decor with blue, green, and hydrangeas
